One of Roxie's most cherished dreams have been realized. Now her debut "Roxie" album from Universal Records has been released and she can't help but remember her childhood days and first taste of showbiz.
Roxie was only eight years old when she joined a singing contest called "Best of the Best" in the States and won. Then her broadcasting talent was put to the test also at that very tender age, when she became a member of the ESPN (the sport channel) Kids.
"I did this stint when I was eight to ten years old", Roxie remembered. It's a sport for kids show and I interviewed several sport luminaries like Olympic game winners, swimming and athletics champions, tennis stars and even football and basketball players".
Roxie had a lot of fun in this nationwide televised program. On the side, she was already a professional child model. She did TV commercials for the Smithsonian Museum 150th anniversary, 4th of July, GAP and JC Penny.
Born in Fairfax, Virginia as Roxanne Barcelo, she and her only brother with their parents, stayed there until Roxie was 12 years old.
"I really didn't know if I was already earning that much when I was modeling and appearing on TV in the States", Roxie laughed. "I didn't bother to ask about money cause I was enjoying what I was doing".
Her mom (Rosebell Jordan) was an accountant in World Bank. while her dad (Antonio Barcelo, a Ph.D from Walden University, Indiana) was a management consultant in a local government agency in Virginia. Her parents decided to come back to their nativeland, simply because they want their children to spend their formative years with positive Filipino values. She was ready for high school when they arrived in the country, so Roxie enrolled at Holy Spirit, Quezon City. Joining the Metropop Star Search was another unforgettable experience for her. Roxie placed first-runner-up and that was already a big thrill for her.
"I was only 13 years old then and the youngest contestant", she recounted. "When the third prize winner was called and it wasn't me, I thought I was not going to win anymore. Being the second prize was much more than I expected".
In 1999, Roxie became a mainstay in the then toprated youth oriented show in GMA, "Click". Roxie admits she has learned so much in her 2 1/2 years in the show.
"The money I earned from the show also helped for the schooling of my younger brother Timothy John", she smiled.
Roxie also made waves in the TV drama series "Kahit Kailan" and "Sana Ikaw Na Nga". She was also a regular in "S.O.P." and guested in several GMA shows.
Now Roxie is managed by Angeli Pangilinan-Valenciano of Manila Genesis Entertainment. While recording her debut "Roxie" album, she didn't appear in any show, although she has already moved to ABS-CBN. She just concentrated in her studies and recording the album the past months. The "Roxie" album from Universal Records contains 10 cuts. Side A has Roxie singing five songs, while the flipside has the minus-ones for all her songs.
The first single from "Roxie", is "Answer The Phone", with lyrics by Ito Rapadas and adapted from a Korean song. The second single, "Kung Alam Mo Lang" is a heartwarming ballad with words by Ito and an original Korean song. "Perfect Love" has infectious beat and melody, arranged by Noel Macanaya with vocal arrangement by Ito Rapadas and guitar performance by Jack Rufo. "Sa Piling Mo" sounds like a shampoo commercial and has that catchy hook. "Don't Look Back" is another upbeat tune, but this title would be impossible for Roxie to do.
'Whether our past experiences were happy or traumatic, we can always look back and reflect on them", she stated. "It would really help us move on to brighter and happier tomorrows".
