After years of struggling from replacing their early line up musicians, one of the country’s premiere reggae bands, Reggae Mistress has now established its stable members along with a remarkable improvement on their music. Their debut album “The Sistahs Are Doin’ It” was recently released by Sony BMG and the first single “Kaibigan” is one of the most sought-after tunes on radio and video channels this season.
Reggae Mistress was conceptualized and pioneered by the legendary drummer of Reggae Eurasia in the Philippines, Rene “Chong” Tengasantos and the country’s ‘Reggae Mama’ who blazed the trail in the reggae scene, Irma “Chang” Tengasantos.
The highly-respected, yet low-profile couple is joined in the band by Mike Bewer on lead guitar, Andre Jalandoni on rhythm guitar), Don Bautista on bass, Puto Gonzales on drums, Jay Yap on keyboards, and the three singing “mistresses” Ira Tengasantos, Ira Peñalosa and Katrina Johnston.
A fusion of talented and brilliant artists, Reggae Mistress effectively puts together a deliciously distinct reggae dish mixing it up with rock & roll, blues, soul, jazz, pop and a dash of dancehall relish that indulges the listeners in a natural high.
The album “The Sistahs Are Doin’ It” is a collection of twelve all-original compositions which convey depth that unifies cultural Pinoy sound with the Caribbean and Jamaican beat, and a mixture of all genres into one kind of music – their kind of music.
Now that reggae music has found a small but growing niche in the country, they, together with other reggae bands, combine their talents to educate their audience about the true meaning and good judgment of reggae itself.
Reggae Mistress is very thankful that their album is now out and their music is gaining mainstream popularity. As band leader Chong Tengasantos puts it, “It has been long overdue but now, we’re finally doing it!”
