Her name Pavi may be unfamiliar to many at this point but just wait and see because in a matter of time, her name will become famous, thanks to bossa nova and to her wonderful singing voice.
But who is Pavi anyway? The young singer is the latest Alpha Music artist catering to the bossa nova genre. She has just released her debut album entitled Bossa Sessions, a compilation of famous love songs spanning decades done the bossa nova way. In the album, she was backed by notable musicians collectively known as Tropicalia.
A native of Capiz, 21-year old Pavi comes from a musically inclined family where her father and siblings all sing and play various musical instruments. She started singing when she was only 2 years old and continues to do so till her growing up years. She had her elementary and high school education in Capiz and only went to Manila to finish her college education where she took up computer programming course. In school, she was always invited to sing at school events which further honed her singing skill. A veteran in joining various singing competition, her biggest break came when she won her school’s annual singing contest where one of the judges is an executive of Alpha Music who later asked her to submit a demo tape. So impressed with her wonderful voice and talent, Alpha tapped her to do the vocals of their bossa nova project.
In the album Bossa Sessions, Pavi’s singing style was put to a test. Even if she has been exposed to Top 40 songs, she has always had an interest in jazz more specifically in bossa nova music. In her debut album she managed to interpret the songs outstandingly the bossa nova way. "I made necessary adjustments in singing bossa nova because you have to really feel the song and the bossa nova mood. I patiently studied all the songs in such a way that no computer curing was done in each of the 16 tracks included in the album. I made sure that my voice is strong and hits the right note as well, she quipps. She counts Astrud Gilberto, Jacintha and Sonia as her musical influences and is happy to say that by listening to these great talents it made her get into the bossa nova mood with much ease.
When asked what song is her favorite in the album she says, "I like 2 songs -- There Will Never Be Another You which a few people know is the original English version of Tito Mina's Ikaw Pa Rin and Shadow of Your Smile because it reminds me of my grandfather.
Pavi had her first taste of success when she was invited to a party consisting of call center agents in which she sung Bizarre Love Triangle which is also included in her Bossa Sessions album. "The audience’s response to the song was tremendous, they knew the song very well and they sang along with me," she said. Another fleeting experience was when Pavi and her band Tropicalia was invited as featured artist in Matabungkay Beach resort during the New Year Eve’s celebration, Pavi sang "I’ll Be There" which is an original of the famous Jackson Five and was also featured as one of the tracks in Bossa Sessions. The audience went wild upon hearing the song because of the upbeat bossa nova arrangement and Pavi’s wonderful rendition.
What makes this album stand out among other bossa nova albums is that Bossa Sessions combines Bossa Nova music with jazz, latin, pop and rock influences. Despite the fusion, Brazilian influence is impossible to miss on the album's skillful re-arrangements of songs given a fresh air and recorded using live instruments. Pavi’s strong and cool voice is suited very well to the easy rhythms of bossa nova. The album is recommended to serious music lovers as well as to those who are discovering the beauty of Bossa Nova for the first time.
Outstanding tracks included in the album are "Night and Day," "I Can’t Tell You Why, ''Call Me," "The Wind Beneath My Wings," "The Look of
Love," "I’ll Be Back," "Blues A Nova," "Too Many Walls," "From Me to You," "Fly Me to the Moon," "Sometimes When We Touch," and "I’ve Never Been to Me."
Bossa Sessions is now available in CD format worldwide.
