Pre-teen singing group Sugarpop is believed to have started a trend paving the way for the emergence of highly talented musically gifted kiddie groups in the local scene. The claim is strengthened with its' members beautiful voices wowing the big singing stars they sing along with.
They are out to prove their immense talent as they release their self titled debut album under Sony BMG Music Entertainment.
A brainchild of musical director Danny Tan, the group is composed of the grand finalists of last year's "Popstar Kids" edition - Rita Iringan (the grand prize winner) and runners-up Julia Ann San Jose, Pocholo Bismonte, Vanessa Rangadhol and Renzo Almario.
The album is bannered by the bouncy track also entitled "Sugarpop." The song composed by Tan and soul diva Jaya introduces a new brand of music that not only kids will love and appreciate.
Other tracks include their versions of the Laura Branigan original "Name Game," "Chocolate," which they interpreted in Tagalog, "Paraiso" (Smokey Mountain), "Alam Mo Na...Di Ba?", "Written In The Sand" and "Happy Hook" plus originals like "You Lift Me Up," "Walang Laglagan," and "Thank You Po." "Sugarpop" combines fun dance and ballads that perfectly reflects their age bracket and feelings.
Soul diva Jaya, who has also suggested the group's name, vouched that everyone in the group can sing solo and has the uncanny ability to belt-out high notes as if they're already adults. The quintet has started appearing on TV as a group since January 2007 and is now a regular performer on GMA 7's S.O.P.
All five youth discoveries have their own identities when it comes to vocal character, musical background and artistic versatility. Iringan, apart from being the first Grand Winner of QTV-1 1 's Popstar Kids, has sung the theme for GMA-7's Princess Charming and played the role of Charlene in Asian Treasures. She is related to celebrity Teroy de Guzman and is counted as the most emotionally charged Sugarpop kid when performing.
The pretty-faced San Jose was a grand-finalist for Eat Bulaga 's Little Miss Philippines and 3rd Runner-Up for ABS-CBN's Munting Miss U, while also appearing in a commercial with megastar Sharon Cuneta. She is naturally a musical youngster with her skill in playing piano, guitar and basic drumming. Completing the Sugarpop girls is Ragandhol who's an oratorical and declamation winner in school, as well as a consistent topnotcher. Her Indian features complement well with Danny's definition of her voice as "thick and strong." No wonder her dad, who initially left her at a younger age, is coming back, proud of learning she is now a singing sensation. Bismonte and Almario are the two boys in the fold, with the former known for his high-pitch vocals that arguably can reach as high as that of songbird Velasquez's, while the latter possessing the star quality that earns his much fans.
"Sugarpop" is now out in CDs at leading record stores nationwide under Sony BMG Music Entertainment.
